WordPress Workshops

I’ll be teaching a series of workshops on WordPress at Frederick Community College. The workshops will be hands-on where students will be using, modifying and updating WordPress sites provided for them to use during the class. Bring your own laptop or feel free to use one in the computer lab.

Beginning WordPress Workshop (5.5 hour session)

This 5 hour workshop will focus on basic WordPress settings and features for both users of the installed version of WordPress (WordPress.org) and the WordPress.com hosted version. This is a hands-on workshop where students can work on their own WordPress site or use one provided for you.  Attendees will learn learn about the different settings under the General, Writing, Reading, and Privacy tabs in WordPress, how to find and upload themes, how to create your blog page, create your first blog post and manage comments from readers, add additional pages to use WordPress as a website, how to embed images, video and other media in your posts and pages, how to add users and set user permissions, how to add Widgets to sidebars. Intermediate WordPress Workshop (7 hour session)

This 7 hour workshop will cover more advanced features of WordPress such Plugin installation and installing and using Search Engine Optimization and Google Analtyics tools. This class is for the self-hosted version of WordPress users only. A WordPress site will be provided for each attendee to be used during the workshop, or attendees are welcome to use their own sites. Attendees will install and configure over over a dozen Plugins including social share widgets, calendars, contact forms, rotating images,  custom menus, and more. We’ll also learn how to find, modify and install themes. Additionally, attendees will learn the basics of CSS (cascading style sheets) to modify fonts, colors, borders, backgrounds and more. Attendees will also learn to modify theme footers, create ‘pretty’ permalinks and add a subscription feature to their blog.
