Email Marketing: Staying in Touch
Before we can discuss what email marketing is, let’s talk about what it is not. Email marketing is not:
- Sending spam to your customers
- A handy way to send email to people you don’t know
- Bombarding customers with sales, discounts and coupons
Email marketing is a cost-effective and easy way to keep your company in the forefront of the minds of your customers and potential customers. In marketing, the old adage of “out of sight(site?), out of mind” is truer than ever. With email marketing, your company can ensure that your customers not only never forget you, but consider you a resource and look forward to receiving your email communications.
Email marketing can also help drive more traffic to your website. In fact, I develop many email marketing strategies designed to do just that.

There are a ton of email marketing companies out there, to name a few: Constant Contact, Vertical Response, and MailChimp. For the low cost, functionality, ease of use and design templates, I prefer Constant Contact.
If you adhere to the following principles (the Dos & Don’ts of Email Marketing), not only will your customers be grateful for each email, but they will forward them to their colleagues and friends, which are potential customers for you.
- DO use the 80/20 rule – 80% of emails to educate/entertain and 20% to advertise products or services
- DO use links to “more information” to track reader’s interest
- DON’T just send information about sales and discounts
- DO include a link to your website, social media pages and email for tracking purposes
- DO create an eye-catching, exciting subject line (about 50 – 80 characters long)
- DON’T use the words “Free”, “Sale”, “Adult” or the symbols “*”, “XX”, “$” in the subject line
- DO put your organization name in the “from” field and not your name
- DON’T make it difficult for the recipient to do what you want them to (what is the “call to action”?)
I can get you up and running with email marketing in no time, whether you just need help to get started, or need help creating and managing and entire email marketing campaign.
